ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: BERTHA ZAMORA

Bertha will be one of the featured artists at the Heartside's 2011 Gala on October 27th. For more information or to reserve your ticket, please e-mail greg@heartside.org or call (616) 235-7211.

Here's Bertha's story in her own words:

When my kids were small, I started drawing murals on the walls—I guess this was the 70’s. I made elephants, hippos and giraffes then mostly, and made the paintings because I had seen these things done in Texas, and I wanted to do them myself. I guess I started doing sewing and embroidery with my mom when I was young, but I taught myself the rest since I have been in Heartside since the 90’s. When I was a kid, I had to work a lot for the family, like an adult. So now that I am an adult, I play with clay and mud like a kid!

ArtPrize showed my naked people pottery in 2010, and that was okay. It got me where I can talk to more people, so I guess that is good. At a coffee shop in town, I have some masks hanging up there for July and August of this year (2011).

All these things give me something to do while I am alive. I don’t want to be sitting down watching TV, I want to do something great before I leave this world. I am defective from my brain, and I know that they say I have a lot of trouble with anxiety. It goes away when I walk and pray, when I occupy my brain with making things by my hands.

-Bertha Zamora

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: DEBRA DIEPPA

Deb will be one of the featured artists at the Heartside's 2011 Gala on October 27th. For more information or to reserve your ticket, please e-mail greg@heartside.org or call (616) 235-7211.

Here's Deb's story in her own words:

There is nothing wrong with looking back over the years as they have ended, unless I use my reflection to beat up on myself and compare myself to perfectionistic goals.  If I take stock as a company would take inventory in a supply room, I would become better known to myself and likely end up composing a gratitude list.  For I will become aware of what I have rather than what I don’t have.

I was born without roots in to the eye of a storm, a family of 6 children, steeped with ill treatment and hurt. My parents never paid bills, so we spent the majority of my childhood between homes, living with grandparents or homeless. The family dynamics were of chaos and abuse, and I found myself escaping into the world of my mind. I felt invisible. I couldn’t tell anybody about the abuse I was going through, or about my pain, so I was stifled by that secrecy.

The past lives in me as it does in all of us, but I have found some people and habits that have become advocates for my life, one of which is Heartside Art Studio. As I look back, I note the great strides I have made in the last couple of years due to my art.  It has helped me face memories, confronting someone when I needed to stand up for myself, speaking out without shame about incest, walking away from abusive situations, nurturing and protecting my inner child, grieving for my stolen childhood, recognizing my rage and using appropriate outlets for it, and building trust in my higher power.

I reflect on others areas of my life, as well.  Have I taken better care of my health?  Have I allowed myself to give and receive love? Have I entered life more fully?

When I look at life this way I see my cup is more than half full.  Thanks to Heartside Ministry and all that they have given me in the last two years, I have been able to express myself through art, and become more aware of my D.I.D. (dissociative identity disorder).

They have made me feel comfortable exploring my battle with my mental health issues.  I feel affirmed and encouraged.

There is no emptiness unless I choose to approach myself from a negative direction.

-Deb Dieppa

ALTRUSA-Heartside GALA

Heartside Ministry helps Grand Rapids’ most vulnerable Neighbors. For 27 years, Heartside has stabilized lives and supported recoveries with welcoming acceptance, meaningful activity, employment, housing and hope.

Most of our homeless Neighbors struggle with both mental illness and substance dependence. You couldn’t guess how many have survived incredible trauma, especially as veterans or victims of childhood neglect or abuse.... I’m sure you can imagine how the past economic downturn has hurt the poorest of the poor whom we serve, deepened their deprivations, expanded their ranks and drained our resources.

Every year, we reach out for your support through our Annual GALA. This year, ALTRUSA (www.altrusa.com), the historic service organization for professional women, is partnering with us to help raise $80,000 needed to continue our education, advocacy, enrichment, and pastoral programs. To reach this goal, we need your help. You can underwrite the GALA with a major gift, sponsor a table, donate an auction item/ or donate services and attending the event, October 7th at Noto’s Restaurant, from 6:00-9:00pm.

We certainly hope you’ll join us for a great evening, bringing some friends who may share your compassion for the homeless and poor. To purchase tickets or get information, e-mail greg@heartside.org or call Greg at (616) 235-7211x104. At $50 per person, our GALA is a bargain—lovely dinner, complimentary table wine, and a cultural event of great significance for all the A list.

2008 ask letter sent out

December 1, 2008

Dear Friend,

It’s a miracle that a place called Heartside has kept a door open for the most vulnerable of our community for the past twenty-five years.  Against all odds, and with the support of friends like you, Heartside has provided a welcome to people who during their daily lives experience mostly isolation and judgment from the world.

Heartside has been called: “A beautiful expression of “Church” proving that Jesus lives in all of us.”  That expression gives daily value to all who are present, neighbors, staff, volunteers and friends.”  Nobody can visit Heartside unmoved by the work done there with the Heartside neighbors...[click here for the rest of the letter]
